Les Houches, Prarion
You may be hearing that the ski conditions in the Alps this year are bad. Worse than we have had for years…. yes its true.
It started out well, after experiencing an exceptionally warm October the temperature changed rapidly. We found ourselves in November with sub zero temperatures. It snowed lots and people were generally optimistic that this year was going to be a good one.
After a few weeks of heavy snow the freezing level rose to between 1500m to 2000m in altitude. This meant resulting in rain for Chamonix town and the beginning of the end for Les Houches (max altitude 1900m). This was the general theme for December and January until it stopped raining and the sun came out. As i write this in Chamonix there is zero snow left in my garden. Its 15 degrees outside in the sun (17th Feb!).
The school holidays are in full swing and there are still substantial snow depths up high. However, the snow is old and icy turning to slush in the afternoon. These are conditions that we usually experience in late March.
